Pregnancy week by week: week 1.

The gestation of a human being usually lasts approximately 280 days, translated into 38 weeks if we start counting from the moment the egg was fertilized, or 40 weeks if we count from the last menstruation.

That is why we have decided to create a new section on our blog, where we will tell you what happens inside a body that is developing week by week, until we reach the most anticipated day. We will talk about the changes that occur both in the fetus and in its mother, in addition to offering advice to have a calmer and safer pregnancy. What are we waiting for? Let's see what happens in week 1 of pregnancy!

We have to give a surprise: at week 1 of pregnancy, there is actually no pregnancy itself yet. How can this happen? Very simple, since during that week, the pregnant person has her period. This vaginal bleeding is caused by the peeling of the functional layer of the endometrium, which has been preparing to receive a fertilized egg, and since there is no fertilized egg, menstruation occurs. Since the estimated date of delivery is calculated from the first day of the last period, this week is counted as part of the pregnancy even though, literally, there is no fetus yet.

During this period of the cycle, the body is preparing for a possible pregnancy. Those people who are planning to remain pregnant, in week one can begin to take a series of measures to give the future fetus a good start in life.

The first step of all is to abandon, if you have, the habits of smoking and drinking alcohol. These substances are very harmful to the gamete, which especially suffers from their effects in the first third of the gestation period. Furthermore, the deliberate consumption of medicines without prior consultation with a doctor must come to an end. There are common medications that during pregnancy can cause problems for you or the baby, even if they are treatments of natural origin.

Of real importance during the first three months of pregnancy, daily consumption of folic acid (vitamin B9 and vitamin B11) is essential. This helps the correct development of the brain and nervous system of the embryo. A deficiency or lack of folic acid, especially during this period, can result in serious problems in development and damage to the fetus.

Folic acid, in addition to the form of ready-made food supplements, can be found in high concentration in products such as beef and poultry liver, yeast, wheat bran or wheat germ, as well as in many fruits and vegetables, fish and meat. Women who are planning to have a baby should consume 0.4 milligrams of folic acid per day, also in the form of a dietary supplement, at the beginning of pregnancy, to prepare the ground, and continue with the intake of folic acid later from week 1.
